Silver back gorillas?
Is the ’silverback’ gorilla a species born with the genes to become a silverback gorilla or do they develope a silver back when they become the ‘leader of the pack’ or does every mature male become a silverback gorilla and find its own pack to dominate?
Silverbacks are dominant males over 12 years old with a patch of silver hair on his back. He is the strongest and most powerful in his group, making all the decisions. Males under 12 years can breed but do not have the silver back, and this develops after they have left the group and started another clan. So, yes, most male gorillas will one day become a silverback.

Every mature male gorilla is a silver back.
Once the male gorillas become mature they have silver backs and most likely become leaders.
As for your last question very rarely a group might be taken over in its entirety by another male.if a silver back from a different pack challenges another silver back and kills the original Leader then it becomes the leader. There is also a strong risk that the new male may kill the infants of the dead silver back.
